Mario launched his American hairstyling career in the Chicago area over 40 years ago and participated in numerous national and international competitions where he gained significant notoriety. Today, Mario is globally recognized as a trend-setter and visionary in the beauty industry. Mario opened his first salon in Villa Park, Illinois, and eventually moved to a larger location in Des Plaines. This included opening the first privately owned salon in a major shopping mall, Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, Illinois.
In those days people came in for shaves every two days. I got to know them and put hot towels on their faces. The maestro made sure that everyone had unconditional service. I learned that guests, as I call them not clients, should be well taken care of by all. Tricoci is known to stop at his multiple locations across the Chicagoland area regularly. We have a focus on how you take care of your hair so it is clean and free of chemicals and sulfates. The Tricocis preach as well as practice their principle for success.
Add to this formula their synergy as a team and you have a dynamic duo. To visit the couple's Long Grove home, you would "turn right at the forest" at the foot of their driveway, says Cheryl Tricoci. There, they have personally planted all of the abundant greenery, except for the largest trees.
Mario Tricoci's relaxed attitude at home is different from his demeanor at the office. He is tall and silver-haired. An attentive listener, his posture shifts just before the conversation winds down. Places to go, people to see. Cheryl Tricoci is striking, with tortoise-shell eyeglass frames matching her hair. She whispers personal stories to a visitor, but the flower becomes a steel magnolia during a business call: "He's wrong. Shall I call him or will you?
Neither has ever been average. All she ever wanted to be was "regular. Her career eventually led her to the runway as a model.
As a teen, Mario Tricoci moved to Canada and apprenticed as a hairstylist. From Ontario, he moved to the Elizabeth Arden Salon in Chicago, then on to the suburbs and, ultimately, a partnership with his brother Franco and others in ownership of five salons and a beauty school in Elmhurst. In , Mario Tricoci and his colleague and friend John Amico, founder and former owner of Hair Performers and We Care Hair chains of hair salons and now owner of John Amico Products, started traveling together to international hairstyling competitions in the United States and Europe.
After 10 years and a slew of championships, he finally quit. I appreciate that. And the thing is: our guests want to stay young. Great colors and great haircuts are for everybody, not just for the teenagers and the year-olds. Someone who is more mature can have a haircut that a year-old would wear as well. What are they passionate about and what can we create to make the young really part of the fashion world? Every guest that I do will certainly be charged accordingly for the service, but I will not keep one dime of it.
One hundred percent of the money [from work that I do] goes to charities. It will be charities mostly for children who have cancer, or for battered women, things of that are very dear to me.
