NC: Not really. Opponents are a separate issue between me and my promoter Frank Warren. This one in particular but this is perfect for me to prove myself and to move from just a world champion. NC: Most definitely. I feel underappreciated at times.
I beat him when I was Time will tell. I still have time on my side but it will all come out in the wash and the cream will rise to the top. AW: You actually went to university and managed to juggle that and boxing for a few years. Can you tell us about that? NC: That period of my life way crazy because my life was so active. I had so much going on, I had a professional boxing career and I had my university study in mathematics, which was such a complex degree.
So my life was very intense. I had such a high work load with the training and the studying and I had to push through at times. It was very hard, very challenging but I love that. The challenge of pushing myself mentally, testing myself physically and pushing myself to the limit, getting myself through exams, getting myself through my professional fights.
It was a real tough time but at the same time I loved it. So the grafting and the hard work I put in has really paid off. I look back now and wonder how I did it. Stevenson winning the WBC title is new on the scene after knocking out Chad Dawson, and Hopkins is still about and a big name in this division. Who knows? Maybe Andre Ward could join us in the future and I believe some great fights are going to be made in the next six months. AW: How do you see some of these fights at pounds playing out: Bernard Hopkins vs.
NC: Hopkins goes into that fight as the favourite. I think he nicks this fight on points. I just think Hopkins will win a close points decision. NC: Interesting fight, Stevenson fresh and confident after his first round knockout.
Cloud is returning after a disappointing performance against Hopkins. I think Stevenson will have to much zest for Tavoris Cloud. So ultimately, I just feel fighting here in America on this big stage, I just feel it was too much of a big opportunity to turn away.
I declined the world title fight and I believe this is a bigger fight. It's probably a more difficult fight but it's on a bigger platform. It's in the States and I like fighting here, so let's do it.
They were meant to go toe-to-toe back in , only for Braehmer to pull out at short notice due to injury. He was subsequently stripped of the WBO title, with the belt being awarded to Cleverly. Why not—it's what we are here to do, put on entertaining fights for great fans, and I am sure there will be the demand for it. Fonfara was defending the lightly regarded WBC International title, but the belt really didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Both fighters have been in with current world champions before Fonfara lost to Adonis Stevenson on points , and they will have their eyes on claiming a major belt in the light heavyweight division.
However, sometimes a title doesn't need to be on the line to make a fight an attractive, and profitable, proposition. A rematch, potentially somewhere in Britain, would be a must-watch fight for all boxing fans. First, though, the two warriors deserve a little time to recover from their bruising first meeting.
