Should i wear a wetsuit for a sprint triathlon

Post 10 of 32 views. Post 11 of 32 views. Up here Nova Scotia it is rare to see anyone not in a wetsuit regardless of temp. Last race I did was at the limit for wetsuits and only one person didn't wear one.

And a few practice sessions help you take it off in 30 seconds max. I bought one of the discount wetsuits online from Xterra. It is rather nice and darn inexpensive.

You can also find a lot of deals right now online from last years stock from many other retailers. Post 12 of 32 views. I have a nice two piece T1, and love it. All the OWS that I did in NC last year were wetsuit legal, they do help, but after a while, if it isn't too cold, swim without one and you will fly thru T1 Good luck!

Wetsuits are meant to be buoyant, which will give you more confidence going into the water if you are a beginner and help you in the swim, if you are a strong swimmer you might be better off without it since wetsuits can be restrictive in the shoulders. A desoto two piece in my opinion is the best. Still using mine that 8yrs old You could, but not designed that way. If you are going to do tri's. For colder water swims Jeff Paul IA.

Post 17 of 32 views. Good question. My brother is a beginner triathlete and just got his wetsuit, the Xterra Vector Pro. He did 10x 50's on without the suit and averaged 51 seconds for each. With the suit on 2 days later he did the same workout and averaged I'm not sure who said expect it to take minutes to remove. With good practice the suit should take no more than 20 seconds to remove I would say even in a sprint unless your swim technique is great without the suit you will be considerably faster with it on.

Most companies will not allow you to return a suit that you have worn Xterra allows returns on used suits within 30 days so you can try it in the water to ensure it fits properly. Good luck! Don't worry The sport is one that embraces people who give it a try.

It just takes a little practice they come off a lot easier when wet - but are very hard to put back on wet. Post 20 of 32 views. Ryan: I agree on the challenges of proper nutrition, and the disadvantage in cases of extreme heat. But saying that the USAT cutoff puts athletes at risk is a bit of an overstatement. The factors relating to heat-related illness are so individual that what works for some may not work for others—thus the wetsuit-optional rule.

Keep in mind that triathletes have been known to suffer from hypothermia during the swim leg even during warm races. Sara: In the summer, in many race locations, temps are pushing 90— degrees. I encourage anyone who is worried about heat issues during the bike and run to consider not starting out in a depleted state.

Instead, use the first leg of the race to stay cool before a long, hot day. Ryan: Everyday amateur triathletes experience a tremendous advantage from the buoyancy of an appropriate-fitting wetsuit. However, it seemed the powers-that-be could not decide on a temperature suitable for the majority. One day it was 72? To keep up with the changing rules, wetsuit makers developed a variety of styles to match the conditions of the water. The Springsuit, sleeveless and cut above the knee, was designed for warmer waters, while still providing the necessary buoyancy.

Finally, Fullsuit included the sleeves and was designed to provide maximum warmth. All three are still used today, but the controversy seems to have died out. When choosing a wetsuit, so much depends upon your geographic location and the conditions or the water in which you will be swimming.

For races in colder waters, i. Escape From Alcatraz, Ironman Canada, a full suit should be worn. Just remember in warmer waters wearing a wetsuit can still leave you dehydrated. So make sure you drink, drink, drink, once on the bike. Check out our triathlon wetsuit buying guide and top triathlon wetsuits. Then I was informed that they actually make you swim faster because of the buoyancy. Well, that confirmed it. I was a swimmer by-golly and there was no way I would ever use such a prop to improve my swimming.

That is until I feasted on a nice healthy portion of humble pie during the swim portion of my second-ever triathlon.

One of the athletes kind of a jerk and one helluva a traithlete! And climbed out of the water right behind me.
